Silversmiths & Allied Trades--Limerick--1769
Hi,
A few notes on some of the previous posts silversmiths.
George Brush: Freeman of the City of Limerick 1750.
John Cullen: Registered at Dublin 1784. (see Jackson’s p.704).
Joseph Johns: Freeman of the City of Limerick 1731, Sheriff 1754, Burgess 1756, Chamberlain 1769, Mayor of Limerick 1773.
Joseph Johns was a member of Freemason’s Lodge No.9 and Treasurer in 1769.
He married Ann Hincks on the 29th August 1737 they had four children. He died September 1775.
Samuel Johns: Freeman of the City of Limerick 1756, Burgess 1766. Samuel Johns was also a member of Freemason’s Lodge No.9 and Warden at that Lodge in 1769. Warden of the Smith’s Corporation of Limerick in 1769. He was married three times. He died in 1795.
I am uncertain as to the relationship between Joseph Johns and Samuel Johns. Some sources have them as Father and Son. Joseph Johns did have a son Samuel, but with a different baptismal record, and Samuel Johns, the silversmith, his parents are listed as Joseph and Bridget. I suspect Samuel the silversmith was the result of a previous marriage.
An advertisement for Samuel Johns in 1774 states ‘Samuel Johns, Silversmith at the corner of Mill Lane carried on the clock and watch making business with John Herbert Croan who served his apprenticeship to Robert Latch & Son.’
George Moore: Freeman of the City of Limerick 1748. Registered at Dublin in 1784 (see Jackson’s p.704)
George O’Halloran (or Halloran): Noted in Main Street, Englishtown in 1766 and at the Exchange in 1769. Registered at Dublin 1784 (see Jackson’s p.704). He died in 1804.
An advertisement in the Limerick Chronicle of July 1761 states ‘George Halloran, Jeweller and Goldsmith is just returned from London and has taken the house opposite Quay Lane lately occupied by Michael Stritch* deceased.’
*Possibly the Father(?) of John Strit (Stritch). John Strit described in advertisement, in 1772 as ‘Working jeweller, goldsmith and gilder’ and from the Limerick Chronicle, August 1779 ‘John Strit, jeweller and silversmith has just opened shop near the Main Guard’. John Strit registered at Dublin 1784. And/or Matthew Stritch who registered at Dublin 1788 (see Jackson’s p.704 for both).
Master and Wardens of the Smith’s Corporation of Limerick as at 1769:
Master: Richard Bennis.
Wardens: Samuel Johns (see above) and Thomas Carr.
Sources: Ferrar’s Limerick Directory for 1769
…………Collecting Irish Silver. Douglas Bennett
…………Jackson’s Silver and Gold Marks. Ian Pickford
Plus my own notes, taken from goodness knows where, too many years ago, to remember.

Re: Silversmiths & Allied Trades--Limerick--1769
The arrival of Huguenots around 1690 in Youghal and New Geneva while having no immediate discernible link to Limerick . Some names do stand out . Cornet Daniel Coluon burial July 28th 1738 ( Refugee ) .
