J. Smart = John Smart, Philadelphia?

Post by pmpadley »

I have 6 fruit spoons with this mark for J. Smart. I am having trouble identifying the maker. Kovels has a John Smart (c.1839-1850), Philadelphia, with no illustration of the mark. I cannot find any other reference in Rainwater, Ensko, Green, or Wiler, nor in this forum. Admittedly, my editions are quite old (they were my grandfather's) but I still come up empty with online searches. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I have the same question, just without the "STANDARD" mark. Does anyone have any insight into this?

John Smart, watchmaker and jeweler, Philadelphia c 1834-c 1855. He is still listed in the 1860 census, but without occupation and referred to as the "Late jeweler" in 1861. The STANDARD mark is untraced to any wholesaler that I know of.

Thank you, wev. Does that mean these are coin silver, even without the "STANDARD" mark?
