Caleb Beal spoon (maybe)

Post by syarn01 »

I collect a few different things but just bought my first silver pieces at a local auction. They were all just way too interesting or beautiful for me to pass up. So thanks in advance for helping me on my early days of learning silver.
This tea caddy spoon had an old label attributing it to Caleb Beal. I thought I'd share because it's great craftsmanship and just a really great design...about 3.5" long and 1" tall. Four clear marks on it and curious what anyone might know about it, or who else it could be. I'm not sure if Beal would have used '13 1/3' type marks? Marks appear to me to be 58, 13 1/3, CB, 7 dots, 6/M

This is a Norwegian sugar spoon from 1858 (can't make out the month), 13-1/3 lød silver (approx. .833 fineness), likely by Bergen maker Christian Børs (born 1788, master in 1814, died in 1859) - his marks were 'CB', or 'BÖRS'/'BØRS'.

Below is mine by Christian Børs, year mark partially struck, looks to be 1852:

Thanks so much Cheryl, that's a truckload of useful information and very fun that you have a similar one from just a few years earlier. I'll do some internet sleuthing for Bors to learn more.
