HC maker London.

Post by gsmoggy »

Hi Members
Any clues to maker? Is It Henry Crosswell 1?

I cannot find his mark anywhere.

Regards Guido.

Hi Ag
no other marks, seller says it's London.
Where are these made when no town mark? Is it unusual no town mark?

Possibly the rest of the hallmark was on the lid which has been remodelled at a later date. The shape of the existing punches certainly look like London 1808. However I feel that there is something wrong about this box. Does it look like a watch case to anybody else? or is it just my suspicious mind.

HC cannot be Henry Croswell as he died in 1805 (see viewtopic.php?f=74&t=25336).

Duty mark is missing too. Small items like tea spoons and sugar tongs didn't have town mark until 1820 (if I remember the year correctly) but the duty mark was always required. I agree that the decoration appears to be made later (it resembles Hanau silver from late 19th / early 20th century) and the box does look like a watch case. I wonder what size it is?

They appear to be a set of secondary marks. Should the item turn out to be part of a converted watchcase, then this would explain the lack of a Duty mark, watchcases were exempt from having a duty mark stamped on them as from 1798.

Hi Phil,Sasropakis,Trev
Many thanks for all of your comments .

On enlarging the image of the opened box,I feel I can see that the color of the silver is not the same where the hinge meets the base.
In other words ,top and base from different boxes. I feel Sasropiakis is correct that it is a Hanau top on and English base.(maybe watch case)

Is it possible to know who the maker HC is? in 1808.

This is probably unusual to find a marriage of these two sections.
Thanks again to everyone for the information ,lots of things to look out for when collecting.

will be interesting to see what it sells for.

Regards Guido.

Hi Members
The box did not sell at auction.
Seems like a lot of people picked it was not right.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Regards Guido.
