Makers mark ID please on knife blades

Post by user701 »

I have searched the web and my silver plate books, but cannot find this makers mark anywhere on a set of six cutlery knives, it has me stumped, any help in the ID would be appreciated.

B over W&CO over Ld
Then there is a person holding something above their head.

EP for electroplate and A1 (quality mark)

Thank you in advance.

Hi User,

I don't recall seeing that mark before, but my money would be on that the topmost letter is an 'h', and the maker, Horace Woodward & Co. Ltd.

As for what the man is holding of his head, Woodward's factory located at Paradise Street, Birmingham was called 'The Atlas Works'.

Thank you Trev for the information. Horace Woodward did use a mark in a similar manner, but not with a Gothic style of writing.
But as you say, it probably is, as the man / figure is probably holding the "world" is a play on The Atlas Works.

Thank you again.

Hello, I came across a spoon with manufacturer's marks in gothic lettering and I concluded were marks of the Horace Woodward concern. They are part of the composite image below.
