Curiously marked fork

Post by Granmaa »

This fiddle pattern dessert fork of British style and with a British style monogram has some rather unBritish hallmarks.

Norway has been suggested to me, though I haven't been able to check this. Any information would be appreciated.

With Trev's help, I've been able to find out that these are Maltese hallmarks, stamped when Malta was a British colony.

The R mark is their standard indicating Roman Fineness: 11 deniers; which I think means 11/12 or 91.66666667%

Now I just need to find out who RC is. Does anyone know of any books on Maltese silver?

New information:

THE GOLDSMITHS OF MALTA AND THEIR MARKS (Victor F. Denaro) (1972)

page 158: R = period 1826-1857; Governor Sir Thomas Maitland during British Rule; equivalent to 917 ppt.

page 186: RC = Rocco Corsone; date of warrant is 16/9/1840

1849 = date of manufacture

Thankyou Doos and Alain
