ATKINS, Theodosia (Grimwade p.427)

Post by buckler »

She was the daughter, not the widow, of James Atkins of 12, Well Street

The Will of James Atkins, Silversmith of Well Street, Cripplegate was probated at the PCC on 2nd December 1815. It left everything to his daughter Theodosia Ann Atkins. She was nominated executrix together with William Wyld as executor.
A William Wyld and Son, Brandy Wine and Hop Merchants are given by Holden’s Triennial Directory 1805-1807 at 10, Lawrence Lane which appears to be the address given in the will. William Wyld was probably a relative of Thomas Wyld, Wine Merchant a neighbour of Atkins in Well Street who later attested to the writing and signature of the will .

Theodosia's mark has been seen on wine labels and buckles.

However by July 1817 Charles Rawlings had entered a mark as plateworker at 12, Well Street, although he continued the production of the small court buckles that were Atkins' speciality. Whether he acquired the business by purchase or by marrying Theodosia is unknown although I can find no record of such a marriage.

Theodosia Ann Atkins was buried at St Giles without Cripplegate on 19th March 1835 evidently still a spinster.

From the burial record reference above kindly proved by Mike we can deduce a bit more about the Atkins family .
The daughters age at death was given as 58, hence she would have been around 38 at the time of her taking over at Well Street. Her place of abode in the burial register is gives as Stoke Newington so one presumes she wished to be buried with her father -assumming that James was buried at St Giles without Cripplegate in 1815. Her age also strongly suggests that James Atkins was not a young man when he died .

We now have another, intriguing , part of the jigsaw!
Thomas Egerton White who had entered a mark as a goldsmith on 21 September 1821 at 4 Bull and Mouth Street recorded with Goldsmiths' Hall a move to 12, Well Street, Cripplegate, the former address of Theodosia Ann Atkins and later Charles Rawlings. White then recorded a move back to 4 Bull and Mouth Street on 11 March 1835. This brief period neatly encompasses the presumed death period of Miss Atkins, supposedly living in Stoke Newington. Almost certainly not a coincidence .
Any rational explanations ?

It may be significant that Joseph Jury, who appears in Land Tax records as tenant of the property from 1835-1878, had no association with the silversmith trade and his family are shown on the 1841 UK Census et al as occupying 12 Well Street as one dwelling which was their family home and indicative that the sub-letting which was apparent from the occupation of (part of?) the property by Mayfield in 1828-29 and White for a short period of 1835 had come to an end before Jury became tenant.
One conjecture would suggest that Theodosia or the Executors of her estate, taking a fresh look at what was happening with the assets, wanted an end to the property being used for business purposes leaving White to pack his bags of tools and head back to Bull & Mouth Street which had not been re-let. Of course another would be his failure to pay the rent!
