GEORGE CLINTON

Kingston, Jamaica

My 5th great grandfather George Clinton (jeweler and silversmith). In the marriage record for my 4th Great grandparents, Edward Manning Paplay and Jane Clinton on January 26 or 29th, 1791, it said that she was the daughter of George Clinton, Jeweler, and his burial announcement from 08 October 1789 in Kingston says he was a silversmith.

Henry Estinghausen, of the Attleboro Jewelry Co., arrived home on the 28th inst. from a ten weeks’ trip to Balize, British Honduras, Jamaica, Venezuela and the islands of Barbados. He had excellent trade everywhere except in Jamaica, where the jewelers would not purchase American goods on account of their not being “Hall marked. ” as are goods of English manufacture.

MACES FOR ST. VINCENT AND ST. LUCIA

Image

These two fine pieces of regalia have been designed and manufactured for the Legislative Councils of St. Vincent and St. Lucia by the Crown jewellers, Messrs. Garrard and Co. Ltd. They weigh some 220 ozs troy each, and stand about 5ft. in height in silver heavily watergilt.

Their production, which was entirely by hand and mainly the work of one craftsman, took some nine months to complete.

For transportation they are each provided with a massive polished teak case fitted and lined with blue cloth.

They are magnificent examples of the silversmith's art and a happy reminder that given the opportunity, the British craftsman can still produce the finest work in the world.
