Possibly silver plated compote.

Post by paulh »

This rather grand compote belongs to a friend, so I have not actually seen it in the flesh yet, but I have been asked if I can identify the marks. Until I can see it for real I am assuming, from the colour that it is plated. It looks American to me, but I cannot find it in any of my American reference books. Does anyone recognise these marks?

Paul.

Hi Paul,

It's Portuguese. Topazio Casquinha.

Thanks Trev. I should have known that you have records of Portugese silver plate manufacturers! It is silver plated I assume?

Hi Paul,

As far as I'm aware, yes, plated. I'm presuming there are no other marks.

I've seen several examples of the 'T - Crown' mark followed by a variety of letters, so I think this must represent a year letter system by Topazio, but I have never come across any details of the years the letters relate to.

Does anyone have access to such information and can explain it to us?

Hello, I was recently turning over a few items at a small auction and managed to snap a photo of another set of “Topazio” marks. Additionally I have incorporated “Paulh’s” compote mark in an image with my mark for a comparison.

My mark was on a dressing table type of box or pin tray, and at the time and through a lens the letter mark looked like an “O”. Also there were no other silver standard marks to be seen from Portugal or anywhere else.

We should add that there was one follow-up estimation of "H" dating for late '50's to early '60's: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13228&p=59477&hilit=topazio#p59477
