Origin of this dish

Post by Smokanabeach »

Hello,

here is a silver dish imported in a France (head of boar hallmark), but do you know those other marks and/or where it is from?

Thank you for your help!

Best regards,

Hallmark looks to be a "B" or a "P" under a crown: could its origin be Portugal?

Hi,
The crowned 'letter P' mark, for the city of PORTO in Portugal, mid 19th century.
Compare with this mark of unidentified silversmith in Porto working at that time.
Zigzag line is sample of silver taken by the assayer.
Regards

One more thing AG2012: what's your opinion about the french "head of boar" on this dish where as it is a portuguese dish? Do you thing custom officers thought it was a franch dish as they don't know thoses marks?

Boar`s head is not an import mark but there is silver with French standard marks (as required) and fantasy marks of unknown origin and without maker`s marks in lozenge :

Everything in your dish indicates Porto (even the style of lettering in maker`s mark).
