ALBERT W. BURTON

Plainville, Massachusetts

The souvenir gold badges for the annual reunion and banquet of the Williams family association in Providence next month have been completed. The work was done by Albert W. Burton, of Plainville, and is very creditable. The badges are round with a fancy edge, there being in the center a pretty monogram of the letters R. W. A. namely, Roger Williams Association. The tools for the work were made especially for it by Spier & Coles.

L. SUNDERLIN & Co.

78-80, East Main Street, Rochester, New York

The annual outing of the L. Sunderlin Co.'s employes was held at Durand Eastman Park, recently. The Sunderlin house of three generations dates back to the early history of the city. The management, employes and their families, numbering 23 people, entitled it a Skiddoo Outing. In the sports events a 100 yard dash for men was won by E. L. Sunderlin; 50 yard sprint for women, won by Miss Stella Rosenbaum; fire building contest, won by Morris Ring, Carl Peterson second; wrestling match, won by Captain Arthur Smith, 3rd Infantry. Judges for the contests were Charles E. Sunderlin and Howard L. Sunderlin. Credit is due Fred Rosenbaum, master of ceremonies. A shore dinner served on the beach was treated with ample justice by the pleasure seekers.

WILLIAM R. BROWN

33, Eddy Street, Providence, Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE

William R. Brown, manufacturer of society emblems and badges, died. Wednesday last, at his residence, 33 Broadway, this city. Mr. Brown’s jewelry business was carried on in a shop at 33 Eddy St., while he also had a printing office at 57 Washington St. In his early life, Mr. Brown had an interesting and varied career, being associated for a number of years with the show business in various capacities, part of the time as the manager of a circus, and is said to have been the first man in this country to have successfully conducted a “prize baby’’ show. He first entered the jewelry business in a small way in this city in 1879, beginning as a manufacturer of name pins, later adding to his business the manufacture of society goods, emblems and badges. He was a member of 62 different organizations, probably the greatest number of secret societies of any man in this State, if not in the entire United States. The funeral, which was held Sunday at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, was largely attended, the burial service being according to the rites of the Order of Red Men.

THEODORE B. STARR

Madison Square, New York

The most stylish club pin I've seen so far is the official badge of the Automobile Club of America, an illustration of which is given below. The design was copyrighted 1900 by Theodore B. Starr, Madison Square, New York. The name is a guarantee of quality and excellence of workmanship.

Image

The badges are made in three different styles. In one style the entire pin is made of solid gold with the enameled lettering in blue. There are two other styles differing only in the material of which the “tire" is made, one having a silver, the other a platinum tire. The backing to the badge is a square piece of red, white and blue striped ribbon. The detail of the badge has been very carefully followed out, even the valve of the tire is reproduced, and the hub is brought out prominently, the whole scheme being a proportionate reproduction of an actual full size automobile wheel.

TIFFANY & Co.

New York

The New York Fire Department has accepted as the design for the new fire badges which it proposes to issue that submitted by Tiffany & Co. About one thousand will be issued. The new badge will be smaller than the old gaudily enameled disks. The design represents the windmill arms of the city’s coat of-arms superimposed upon a rayed plaque, the ends of the forearms extending a trifle beyond the plate and bearing the initials F. D. N. Y, Between the two upper arms are the words "Fire Lines," and below is the name of the person to whom the badge is issued. A fireman’s hat is in the center of the design, and bears the badge number on its front.

Williams & Anderson, emblem makers, Providence, have changed their location in that city from 220 Eddy Street to 33 Broad Street. In their new quarters they enjoy the extra space and better lighting and general facilities necessitated by their increasing business. The officers of the company are Sidney Williams, president and general manager; Samuel Anderson, vice-president, and Walter E. Ensign, secretary and treasurer. The latter is also the traveling representative of the firm.
