An Old Jewelry House - The house of Simons Bros. & Co., of Philadelphia, the well known cane and thimble manufacturers, this year celebrate the 50th anniversary of their business career. This career has not only been a long but an honorable one, so much so that wherever the house is known its name is a synonym for honorable and upright dealing. The goods of their manufacture have a large sale in Canada, and those dealers who have most thoroughly tested their quality are the most ready to testify to the value of their trade mark as an unfailing index of good value and honest goods. The house, although well up in years, has not fallen behind in the race for business ; on the contrary, it is fully abreast of its competitors in the introduction of tasty and saleable novelties. The many members of the trade in Canada who have handled their goods will join The Trader in wishing the house a long lease of business prosperity.

There has been two changes in our list of official jewelers. In accordance with the resolution of the Sixtieth Annual Convention, the executive council has suspended the appointment of Wright, Kay & Co. The resolution also permits the council to appoint them again at their discretion, but such has not as yet been done. The cause for the withdrawing of the appointment was found in a disregard for some of the regulations. The other change is the substitution of Charles I. Clegg for Simons Bro. & Co. This really amounts to a change in name only, as Mr. Clegg has been the head of the fraternity department for some years past and has had entire charge of the work, although all has been done in the name of Simons Bro. & Co. Mr. Clegg will occupy the same place in the stores of Simons Bro. & Co., as heretofore.

The well known concern of Simons Bros. Co. is among the concerns which have a long history covering well over half a century. This business was established in Philadelphia in 1839 by George W. Simons, who associated with him Peter B. Simons. A few years later Stacey B. Obdyke was admitted and the firm became Geo. W. Simons & Bro., Obdyke & Co. On the withdrawal of Mr. Obdyke a few years later Thomas Maddock was admitted to the firm and the name changed to Simons Bro. & Co.

During the Civil War one of the principal products of this concern was the manufacture of fine swords and among the famous ones manufactured was that presented to General Meade at the close of the war.

About 1878 Peter B. Simons opened a branch office in San Francisco and finally withdrew from the Philadelphia concern. In the course of the following years the sons of George W. Simons were admitted to partnership, namely: John F. Simons, George W. Simons, Jr., Frederick M. Simons and Edwin S. Simons.

It is interesting to note also that at the end of the Spanish War the concern manufactured the sword which was presented to Admiral Sampson by the State of New York.

In 1913 a corporation was formed and the firm became Simons Bros. Co., the surviving members of the organization being Frederick M. and Edwin S. During the entire 79 years of its existence the concern has specialized in the manufacture of gold and silver thimbles of which it probably is the largest manufacturer in the country.

For many years the concern was located at Ransted Court, Philadelphia, Pa., but for the past 65 years the factory has been operated at 618 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, with branch offices in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

The office of Condit & Rattey, 13 Maiden Lane, the New York agents for the Simons Bros. Co. and other manufacturers, was the scene Wednesday of a very pleasant episode when Roland S. Condit, of this firm, was presented with a handsome gold watch on behalf of the members of the Simons firm, the presentation being made by Edward S. Simons. The gift to Mr. Condit was in commemoration of the completion of 25 years of association with this well-known jewelry house, Mr. Condit having come to the old firm of Simons, Bro. & Co. as a boy, Aug. 23, 1897. Accompanying the gift was a letter from his old employers expressing their affectionate appreciation of their mutual association through the quarter of a century and thanking him for his faithful devotion and loyalty to the interests of the concern, as well as his unerring counsel during that time. Mr. Condit showed his appreciation of the gift in appropriate words and has been the recipient of many congratulations from his friends in the trade.

Simon Bros. & Co. will hold their travelers' meeting at their store, 614 Chestnut street, some time within the next two weeks to outline their plan of procedure for the ensuing year. W. T. Holden, the Pacific Coast representative of the house, is in town, and E. A. Dorrance, the Chicago agent, is expected during the week. Several new designs are in the course of manufacture by this firm for introduction to the fall trade.
