SYDNEY THOMAS STEEL
Cheltenham and Birmingham
Obituary
Mr. Sydney T. Steel
The death has occurred of Mr. Sydney Thomas Steel, a well-known manufacturing jeweller in the Midlands. He was 91.
Mr. Steel gained his experience in the trade in London, Edinburgh and other towns and then went to Cheltenham, Glos., where he founded a business in the town's Promenade. He also had manufacturing workshops in Birmingham. He retired in 1920.
One of his proudest moments was on Armistice Day, 1919, when he successfully led a movement for the closure of all of the Promenade shops for the day. One large department store gave strong opposition, but eventually gave way and its staff given the day off.
