F.J. SKUCE & CO.
27, later, 54, Page Street, Providence, Rhode Island
F. J. Skuce & Co. - Providence, R.I. - 1897
F.J. SKUCE & CO., Enamelers, Gold, Silver, and Plated Jewelry Enameled in all Colors, Emblem Work a Specialty, No. 27 Page Street.–One of the ablest exponents of the art of enameling in the city of Providence is the responsible firm of F. J. Skuce & Co., located at No. 27 Page Street, whose operations have all along been characterized by the adoption of all the latest improved scientific processes and appliances as they have been introduced from time to time; as also in keeping well abreast of the progressive spirit of the age in all other respects. Thus the methods in use some few years back, whereby the enamel would often crack, fade, or come off bodily, have been discarded in favor of those now in vogue, obviating these unsatisfactory results and producing an enamel of uniform excellence, in permanent colors, that will stand any ordinary usage for many years. Thus the firm's productions are freely recognized as a standard make, and the house is now the centre of a trade of considerable volume and importance, reaching all over the United States, and furnishing regular employment for eighteen skilled workers. Gold, silver, and plated jewelry and silverware of every description are enameled in all colors, a specialty being made of emblem work for societies, and each order is fulfilled promptly and accurately under the close scrutiny of the proprietors. They also manufacture and have for sale a full line of enamels, both transparent and opaque; also emery stones of all grades. The enterprise was founded in 1870 by Messrs. R. and F. J. Skuce, and in 1889 the present firm was formed, the co-partners being Mr. Frank J. Skuce and Mr. John T. King, who have a practical experience in this line at their command of thirty years and twenty years respectively. The third floor, 50 x 100 feet in superficial area, is occupied, and is provided with four ovens, all necessary machines, appliances, and accessories pertaining to the industry, steam-power being the motive force used. Of the able proprietors, Mr. Skuce was born in Massachusetts and came to Providence in 1861, while Mr. King is a native of this city.

L. W. PENNINGTON
81, Mechanic Street, Worcester, Massachusetts
L. W. PENNINGTON - Designer, Manufacturing Jeweler and Diamond Setter—No. 81 Mechanic Street.
The manufacture of jewelry and society emblems from original designs is an industry in which art culture and inventive genius combine with a high order of trained manual skill to produce articles in the precious metals that shall at once please the eye and serve some purpose of utility or adornment. Thorough masters of this art in all its branches are comparatively few in number, and when found are usually kept busy as bees on orders from all classes of customers. One of the most accomplished and successful designing and manufacturing jewelers of whom we have any knowledge is Mr. L. W. Pennington, who occupies the second floor, 15 x 38 feet, No. 81 Mechanic street, where he has a superb equipment of late improved machinery and appliances, steam power, all requisite conveniences, and employs five or six experts. As before intimated, Mr. Pennington's specialty is the designing and execution of fine work in the precious metals and the making of novelties in jewelry, military, civic and society badges and emblems and similar work of the best grade. He is also a diamond-setter of rare skill and judgment, and gives careful attention to orders for electro-plating, gilding, acid coloring, oxidizing, and repairing and lapping of every description. Parties having in their possession broken or worn-out plate, jewelry or other articles of gold or silver will find here a ready sale at full prices. Mr. Pennington is of English birth, came to America sixteen years ago, and was engaged in business at Providence for several years previous to coming here in 1887.
