An action brought by I. Shoot & Co., jewelers, 354 Queen St. W., Toronto, against the Travelers’ Indemnity Co., to recover $7,238 under a policy against loss by robbery was dismissed by the court on Aug. 4. Mr. Shoot claimed that in January of last year his store was entered by robbers, who threw him down the cellar stairs and ransacked the store. He held a policy in the Travelers’ Indemnity Co. for $10,000. The company was not satisfied with the proofs of the loss and refused payment and Shoot & Co. brought suit to recover the amount. ROWLAND & CAMPBELL

Winnipeg

An interesting event to the trade this past month was the return to the city of Lieut. -Col. W. J. Simpson, who for nearly five years served as
director of contracts in connection with the Canadian expedionary forces. Prior to the outbreak of war Col. Simpson was connected with the
wholesale jewelry firm of Rowland & Campbell here, and is well known to the members of the trade.

Col. Simpson left Winnipeg as a lieutenant in the 100th Grenadiers. In July, 1915, he was notified that his services had been requisitioned by the
Canadian military headquarters in England. When he arrived in the Old Country he found that the new establishment with which he was to be
connected had been completed, and in the meantime he was assigned the post of paymaster of the 9th Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe. In September, however, Major-Gen. A. D. McRae was appointed director of supply and transport and organized the C.A.S.C. headquarters at Sandgate, to which Col. Simpson was attached as purchasing officer. The following year the contracts branch was organized and Col. Simpson was made chief purchasing officer, an appointment which was later enlarged to that of director of contracts. By an Ottawa Order-in-Council the director of contracts was given supervision over the expenditure of all Canadian public funds in England. This included the purchase of arms, guns and munitions, horses, forage, medical and surgical supplies and other commodities used by the expeditionary force.

Following the armistice in November, 1918, the Military Council issued orders that all supplies and government stores in England were to be disposed of, and Col. Simpson was made director of sales, in addition to his duties as director of contracts. He conducted a series of auction sales at all of the Canadian military depots, the prices realized in many instances being in excess of those originally paid. During the past three months Col. Simpson has been engaged in closing the official records of the contracts branch in Ottawa. Prior to being identified with Rowland & Campbell, he was with Robinson & Company here, and later he conducted a retail china and crockery business on Portage avenue. At the time of writing, Col. Simpson is enjoying a holiday at Winnipeg Beach.

R.L. McGILL

Main Street, Galt, Ontario

A serious fire occurred recently in the downtown section at Galt, Ont., and R. L. McGill's jewelry store on Main St., was badly damaged. Mr. McGill had been in the store only about 20 minutes before attending to the furnace and everything was apparently all right when he left. An alarm was quickly given and three streams of water were put into play and while the firemen were fighting the fire on the first floor the flames worked up the partition to the second floor to a room containing packing boxes and excelsior, but did not reach the third floor. After about three quarters of an hour the fire was under control but not until after considerable damage had been done to the stock. Some of the glass cases were broken by the heat The lire was caused by an overheated smoke pipe passing through one of the wall cases, although it was wrapped in asbestos.

A bogus check operator recently endeavored to obtain jewelry to the value of $138 at the jewelry store of Kinnear & D'Esterre, Kingston, Ont., tendering a check for the amount drawn on a local bank. Mr. D'Esterre became suspicious and called up the bank over the telephone. He found that the man had no account there, and the swindler made a rapid exit.

Kinnear & d'Esterre were known to have manufactured military cap badges, etc.

The business was later styled 'Kinnear d'Esterre'. They were in business until at least 2004.
