Recently Messrs Mappin Bros., of Regent-street, W., allowed Andrew Paterson, thirty-nine, described as a traveller, of Burntwaite-road, Walham Green, to take away two diamond rings and other valuables to the extent of £100, upon the assertions that he had customers for them. The articles, however, were subsequently found pawned. It was pleaded that hitherto prisoner had borne an unblemished character, but had recently become a victim to betting. In passing sentence of six months' hard labor upon him, the magistrate remarked upon betting being a fruitful source of crime.

Two distinguished visitors are with us in Montreal in the persons of Messrs. Walter and Herbert Mappin, of the firm of Mappin & Webb, who are here visiting their branch establishments throughout the American continent. This is their first visit to Canada since the establishment of the Montreal branch seven years ago. Messrs. Mappin have just come from South America, where they visited their branches in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and San Paulo.

The Casket Presented by the Borough of Maidstone to the Lord Mayor of London

Image

The casket presented by the Borough of Maidstone to the Lord Mayor of London is richly gilt, handsomely chased, and ornamented in repoussé, and rests upon a velvet plinth supported by scroll feet. The arms of the Borough of Maidstone appear enamelled in proper colours on a shield surmounting the lid, below which is the monogram of the recipient, also in enamel, with the arms and crest respectively engraved each side of the monogram. Upon the centre of the reverse are enamelled the baronet's arms, with his motto, “ Facta non Verba," and the' six panels of the casket are filled by exquisite reproductions in enamel of various interesting and historic places in Maidstone, including the pagoda. in the grounds of Moat House (Sir Marcus Samuel's residence in Maidstone), which King George III. used in reviewing the Kentish Volunteers. This handsome gift was designed and executed by Messrs. Mappin and Webb, Limited, of Queen Victoria Street, Oxford Street, and Regent Street.

London Jewelers Robbed

London, Sept. 1.–Mappin & Webb, the well-known jewelers and manufacturers of Prince's silver plate here, were the victims the other day of a particularly daring robbery which was staged at the Piccadilly Hotel, west London. In response to the request of a customer, posing as an American, two assistants from the Regent St. jewelry establishment went to the hotel with £5,000 worth of jewelry from which the visitor was to select what he wanted. On arriving the jewelry clerks were shown into one of the rooms of the suite taken by the hotel guest who was down on the register as Mr. Bolman, New York city. He said he wished to show the jewelry to his wife in the adjoining bedroom. The assistants stated they could not let the jewelry out of their sight without a cash payment. "Sure, that's all right," said the hotel guest, picking a £1,500 diamond ring from the tray. "How about this one?" Before the assistants realized what was happening the man jumped into the next room and slammed the door in their faces. The knob of the door came off in the hand of one of the jewelry clerks. A rush to the outer door disclosed the fact that they had been locked in the first room. The telephone had been placed out of action and the bell rope cut through. Some time elapsed before the two jewelry men were released by inmates of the hotel and the thief made good his escape. Scotland Yard believes "Mr. Bolman" is one of the transatlantic jewel gang working between New York, Southampton, London and Paris, and which is giving the police a strenuous time during the transient American season. These international thieves, the police say, are posing as independent men holiday making here or across the Atlantic and they make the acquaintance of passengers on the liners, afterwards shadowing them to the big cities where they are turned over to "residential operators." who do the actual work. Scotland Yard has issued a warning to wealthy Americans and others having with them valuable jewelry to exercise care in their dealings with strangers and has also advised jewelers to make sure of the standing of supposed patrons who show any tendency for long-distance dealing in jewelry by the messenger route.

Talking about extensions reminds me that the facade of Mappin and Webb's new show-room in Norfolk-street is taking definite shape. The row of handsome granite pillars on the ground floor, with panels of the same material above, is much admired by the passers by. The front of the second floor, which is just beginning to show itself, is evidently going to be of red brick, with stone mouldings. The whole of the work is being executed in the very best style, and if the portion now visible be a fair specimen of the frontage when completed, the building will be an acceptable addition to the architecture of this part of the town.

That portion of Mappin and Webb's new premises which fronts Norfolk Street has now been denuded of its scaffolding. The new building is much higher than the older part of the firm's premises, which flanks it on one side, and of the show-rooms and offices of Mr. Maurice Baum, which adjoin it on the other. It thus forms a prominent feature in a comparatively central situation, an advantage which it possesses over most of the other first-class silver and electro-plate establishments of the town. An air of picturesqueness is imparted to the facade by the oriel windows over what will ultimately constitute the main entrance to the firm's offices. The finishing touches to the interior and the office fittings will probably take up some months yet. When these are completed we shall avail ourselves of the offer, made some time ago, of a personally conducted run round, and give our readers the benefit of the result.

One could not help admiring the vigor of the new blood lately introduced into the old firm of Messrs. Mappin Bros., in connection with the gold casket for the German Emperor. Of course such things are objectively and subjectively " Ads.," but it frequently happens that these things have to be "rushed," and that they are only finished perhaps a day or two before they have to be delivered ; consequently there is not much time for exhibition. Fully appreciating this, the above company had a large ticket (gold incised letters on a dark ground) placed in the centre of the window, informing the public that the casket was in course of manufacture ; and so the best was made of the advertisement. We have known several hundred pounds lost over these public presentations, though not exactly by these caskets, as the price of them usually is not much more than £100. Sometimes, of course, this figure is greatly exceeded, as for example in the case of the casket presented to the Emperor of Russia, which was about the finest specimen ever turned out.

Allusion has more than once been made in these Notes to the extensive art scheme devised by Mr. H. C. Howlden, the manager at Messrs. Mappin & Webb's, on behalf of those employed under him. The course of lectures given and the study of art and design, followed closely by many of the workpeople, have had the desired effect, viz., a distinct improvement in many departments of the firm's business. The classes, it will be remembered, were established something like two years ago, and have since been systematically conducted on the lines laid down by Mr. Howlden. The course of instruction began with a study of the Egyptian style of ornament, which was followed in order by the Assyrian and Persian, proceeding to the Greek, Roman, Gothic, and Mediaeval. The lecture inaugurating the forthcoming session has just been delivered in the large burnishing room of the works in Norfolk-street, the proceedings being presided over by the Mayor, Alderman Batty Langley, J. P. The subject was "Art under the Tudors and Stuarts–sixteenth and seventeenth centuries "–and in point of interest and instruction it was second to none of its predecessors. Much has already been done in the direction of art development in Sheffield, and in nearly every workshop designs are produced which in point of beauty and fidelity of treatment are superior to those of the past. It would stimulate the movement now going on in this direction if more of our large electro-plate establishments would follow the example so worthily set by Messrs. Mappin and Webb.

GREEN GOLD

Image

No gift appeals to a woman more surely than a jewelled ornament, the value of which is still further enhanced if there is something novel about it. The Christmas display of jewellery at the fine establishments of Messrs. Mappin and Webb whether at 158-62, Oxford Street, E.C.; or 220, Regent Street –will leave the most exacting customer with nothing to desire, either as to novelty, beauty of design, or variety in price. What is new and fascinating is the green gold jewellery set with precious stones. The effect is delicate and exquisite, and the prices are quite moderate. A small pendant, with amethysts and pearls and a particularly pretty lace - like green setting, costs only five guineas. A plaque with this mounting set with sapphires and pearls is quite lovely; while a brooch with pearl beading all round and set with peridot and topaz is as pretty an ornament as the heart of woman could desire; such brooches, in many designs, are obtainable from 37s. 6d. The greenish tint of the gold makes a capital background for coloured stones, as they accord and harmonise with it admirably. A beautiful and most useful gift is a watch-bracelet, which expands to any kind of glove and is furnished with a fastener to obviate the necessity for passing it over the hand. For a man a capital present is a pair of enamel sporting links–a fox's mask and horn on one, and a crop and horse's head on the other. Pearl studs are always very acceptable presents to a man. A really beautiful gift is a diamond and pearl circular plaque, very finely set on a pearl-and-diamond sautoir. A diamond brooch simulating a lace bow with fringed ends is also a most covetable ornament. Hundreds of such, at all kinds of prices, arc found among the presents of jewellery displayed by this well-known firm.
