Wendy Ramshaw: Rooms of Dreams
Until 4th December 2014
As one of Britain’s leading contemporary designers, Wendy Ramshaw CBE is renowned for her jewellery and distinctive, large-scale public art.
Born in the North East, Ramshaw has had an acclaimed career spanning fifty years. Rooms of Dreams showcases key works from the 1960s onwards, bringing together Ramshaw’s jewellery and public art for the first time. The objects include her early fashionable and ephemeral jewellery in paper and plastic through to jewels in precious metals, stones, ceramic and glass.
Over the last twenty years, Ramshaw has been responsible for a number of successful public art commissions including gates for Mowbray Park in Sunderland and the recent development at One Hyde Park in London.
One of her most ambitious projects is the critically acclaimed and influential body of work ‘Rooms of Dreams’, originally conceived and installed at the Scottish Gallery in 2002. This is now recognised as an important milestone in the development of contemporary applied art. The Room of Dreams is a magical environment that weaves over eighty pieces into a story with many layers; drawing inspiration from stories such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
Opening hours: Tues, Wed, Fri & Sat: 10am — 4.30pm, Thurs: 10am — 7pm, Sun: 12 — 4pm, Closed Monday
