B. ANDREWS BROTHERS & CO.

This firm has the distinction of being manufacturing jewellers by appointment to H.H. the Sultan of Zanzibar, and was established in 1887. There is a branch at Da-res-Salaam, but the head office is at Point de Galle, Ceylon. Highest awards were won at Dar-es-Salaam in 1904, and at Zanzibar in 1905. The firm deals in precious stones, mounted or unmounted. Ivory carving and tortoiseshell work is carried out. Large quantities of precious stones and curious lace from Ceylon are kept in stock, and there are workshops for the carving of ivory and ebony and gold and silversmiths’ work. Andrews & Co. have a very fine collection, and visitors should give their shop a call. Agents visit all passenger ships with articles for sale.

THE MACE OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS OF THE DOMINION OF CANADA





“This Mace, replacing the original Mace of the House of Commons of the Dominion of Canada, destroyed by fire on February 3, 1916, was presented by Colonel the Rt. Hon. Sir Charles Creers Wakefield, Lord Mayor of London, and the Sheriffs of London, George Alexander Touche, Esq., M.P., and Samuel George Shead, Esq., June, 1916.

It may be worthy of note that the Parliament at Westminster has had three Maces. One was lost, or probably, if as stated it was of solid gold, stolen in the reign of Charles I. The present one is the “Bauble” of Cromwell’s time, reconstructed after the restoration of Charles II. by a goldsmith named Thomas Maunday. The first Mace used in the Canadian Parliament after Confederation came from the old Parliament of Canada and had a narrow escape from destruction in the fire which destroyed the Parliament House at Montreal in 1849, only to meet a like fate at Ottawa nearly 70 years later. Though the Mace is only a gilded emblem it is more important than it looks and plays its part in the procedure of legislation. No legislation is effective without it being on the Table of the House. At times the chamber is “in Committee”. That means that the sitting of the House is for the time suspended and a general and free conversation on the merits of a bill takes place. Then the Mace is placed out of sight until the House resumes.”

OLIVER GERRISH

An image of the Portland, Maine, silversmith, Oliver Gerrish:



Oliver Gerrish was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on the 4th January 1796, he was educated in the schools of his native town and learned his trade of his father, the silversmith Timothy Gerrish and served his apprenticeship under the Portsmouth silversmith, John Gaines. He moved to Portland in 1819 and followed his business there till a few months before his death on the 3rd December 1888. He married in 1826, Sarah Little, the youngest daughter of Paul Little, a native of Newbury, and also a silversmith. He was in partnership from 1858 to 1877 with Nathaniel Pearson, as Gerrish & Pearson. Oliver's brother, Andrew, was also a noted silversmith.

The bowl on the left is the Steward's Cup ; in the centre with the horse handles is the Goodwood Cup ; and on the right the Chesterfield Cup. All these pieces are in silver gilt, and were supplied by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co. Ltd., of 112 Regent Street, London, W.1.

THE JEWELS OF AN EX-SULTAN

An image of some of the Crown Jewels once belonging to the Sultan of Turkey, Abdul Hamid:



The jewels were seized in the revolution of July 1908 and auctioned at Paris in 1911.

Among the items shown are (1) a diadem in gold and diamonds with diamond crescent and diamond plume; (2) opera glasses in gold, enamel, and precious stones; (4) a hand-mirror in gold, enamel, and diamonds; (5) an alarm clock set with brilliants; (6) a brooch of diamonds; (7) a corsage plaque of emeralds and diamonds; and (8) a belt-clasp of diamonds. The three strings of pearls with diamond clasps (3) realised the highest price ever given at the time for a pearl necklace at a Paris sale, it was bought by a Paris jeweller.
