HELP! Can't id this mark!!!

Postby oexning » Thu Sep 13, 2007 10:51 am

Hey there,
Any help y'all could give me in ID'ing this mark would be great. It appears to be a capital P w/ a crown on top and a laurel wreath/swag over a hash mark and then another mark with what appears to be PHE, THE, PHF, TH or THE in cursive. I have attached photos.
Thanks a so much,
Beth Walker

The crowned "P" is Portuguese, the mark of assayer Luís António Rodrigues de Araujo (or one of his subordinates) in the city of Porto. He served from 1843 to 1853, which dates your piece. The maker's mark, unfortunately, is not listed in Vidal & Moitinho de Almeida's Marcas de Contrastes e Ourives Portugueses, but it is certainly consistent with the style of other mid-19th century Portuguese maker's marks.

Hi there,
I can't thank you enough for your help.
Any suggestions on where I might look for the actual silversmith marks?
Thanks a bunch,
Beth

Unfortunately, no. Vidal & Moitinho de Almeida (4th edition) is the standard reference; if it isn't there I can't think where to look.
