May it be XVIII century Lithuanian silver?

Post by luki-g »

Hello,
can anyone identify this mark?
On auctioneers website it is identified as 'presumably Vilnius, Thadeus Skendzierski, 1758 - 1788' but I never come across his mark consisting of intertingled letters. It's always separate TS.
I would much appreciate your opinion.

"Presumably"??? On auction sites you might find anything supporting a sale. Anyway, I share your opinion that Tadas Skendierskis punch was two separate letters i.e. TS. Any other punches are not known. The fineness 12 lot is typical for Lithuania, but??? In my opinion that is not enough to say that it might be him. Unfortunately I cannot help you otherwise than check Jϋrgen Specht (Jirgens Spehts) in Riga. He has a rather similar mark, a bit early, but again a shot in the dark ???

Dear Qrt.S
thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, I agree that I need to widen my search beyond Lithuania.
Jϋrgen Specht lived in XVII Century and apparently this mark is on an item from XVIII century... You may be right though that Baltica is the region I should look closer at.
Once again many thanks!

It is too ornate for mid 18th century.
Looks like Biedermeier or mid 19th century to me.
