snuff box,935 sterling what country? Hungary?

Post by gsmoggy »

Hello Members
Thinking of purchasing this box, Looks L.H in lozeng plus the word sterling,Is it Austro Hungarian?
Factory number 895,no other marks.

Interesting box, blue enamel base. Any clues to maker?

Kind Regards Guido.

Hi,
J.C. Klinkosch Vienna, Republic of Austria (post WW I).
Compare his marks, your mark is on the left:

Hello Ag.
Thanks for your reply.
Lozeng shape similar ,but not the same ,different letters as well,May be a Viennese maker ,but not this one.

Very strange no other city marks. Did they use STERLING on boxes made in Vienna?

Letters L H ,in this mark +935.

Yes, enamelled boxes were made in Austrian Republic after WW I for export and often marked with ``sterling``.
This excellent guilloché enamel is typical for Vienna Art Deco export.
I have seen JCK mark but , of course, I have no seen everything.
On the other hand, I can bet it`s made in Vienna.

Hello Ag.
again many thanks for your comments,I think you may be correct about it being made in Vienna, I like it very much ,the trouble is that it is not a bargain
quite expensive.
do not often see these here in Australia. It is amazing how many different books we need for research .The mark seems to late for the books I have.

Will let you know the results of my thoughts re purchase.

Kind Regards Guido.

Hello Members
I did purchase the box. AG your instincts were spot on,well done.
Has" Made in Austria "on lip of lid. (that helps) Makers mark is LW,not LH. Because of place of mark, very hard to get clear image.

if someone has a book on later Austrian makers, may find maker. Interesting to know approx date.

I have attached some other images, interesting top done in a Plique a Jour ,technique. Lucky all panels are there.
first time I have seen a box top like this.

Hello Members
Not many Austrian makers with letters LW, Looks like Leo Wangner, maybe a chance,if one of his earlier pieces before Hoopoe mark 1922.
does it mean no hoopoe mark ,box pre 1922?

Hi,
I opt for Leo Wagner, located at Obere Donaustrasse 57.
He was known to have produced enamel of superb quality. He had separate LW mark but also this mark combined with fineness.
There are several LW unidentified enamel cases online, but if you enter ``LW Vienna enamel box`` you will find what he made.
Plique a Jour is the most difficult enameling technique. Unlike cloisonné where cells of twisted wire are just filled with dissolved vitreous powder and fired with whatever results and flaws, Plique a Jour allows no mistakes and sometimes several attempts are needed to achieve acceptable, i.e. perfect result due to difficult firing process.
That`s the reason Plique a Jour is seldom found, and let alone intact.

Hello Ag
Many thanks for the info,Is there much info on Leo Wagner? working period,it says 1910-24.
As I said before does no Hoopoe bird mark mean the box is pre 1922 (you did say 1920)
I agree the one online ,Vienna card box with coat of arms (owner says dates around 1897) is by the same maker as my box, same pattern around sides, same blue base (that one, engine turning) He must be wrong ,if Wagner started in 1910. We are assuming we have the right maker.
I wonder if the number 895 was for the 895th box he made starting from no 1.
thanks for your assistance.

895 is internal, factory inventory, production number of no importance to us; it could mean anything.
``Made in Austria`` means Austrian Republic after WW I, regardless of other marks.
I think the subject is exhausted; we have the maker, the address in Vienna and almost exact dating. That`s more than enough when attributing silver.

That is exactly what has been said before Wagner`s mark was identified:
