18th-century? Silver Syringe Hallmark Identification

Post by mplusignan »

Hello everyone,

I am new to this group in hopes of receiving some help in identifying these silver hallmarks found on this suspected 18th-century syringe. I would like to know its origin, its maker, and the years in which it was made. It was obtained from a German collector, but it is unknown if it is indeed of German origin.

Any help is much appreciated!

Many thanks to you all.

If I see well, there is a "repunzierung" mark of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Someone more informed than me on the subject will be able to go into detail.
In my opinion the syringe is a "Pichkari", used in India for the festival of Holi.

Hi,
Very unusual; Z II mark was used in The Netherlands 1953 for .835 on imported or used articles.

There are actually two "repunzierung" marks of the Austro-Hungarian empire (1806) for medium articles and small articles (Vienna assay office - letter A in a rectangle - rhombus).

Unfortunately our site does not show the marks of the Austrian empire 1737-1866, although coming soon?

Here are some images from a museum in Germany with a similar syringe... the curiosity on this one continues...

Austrian early 19th century for old silver supports the idea of medical syringe.
Much later Netherland`s mark can be accepted.
Perforated end makes no sense, though.
Besides, we have not seen the plunger; images are chaotic and do not help much in identifying the object.
Is perforated end removable as needed to fix the enema extension, which is missing ?

I am confident it is indeed an enema or urethral syringe - my friend has a similar syringe shown below, complete with its nozzles. Curious though, his syringe has no hallmarks.

I've read this publication before, great reference material.

Any other thoughts on the CA hallmark, the ZII hallmark, and the 3rd which looks somewhat cut off?

Could the syringe have been made late 18th century, but bought early 19th century and subsequently stamped CA?

And the ZII stamp, could this have been voluntarily tested and subsequently stamped in the Netherlands?

I am reading that the ZII mark was made after 1953 indicating 835 thousandths silver fineness in the Netherlands, which is conflicting because there is a earlier CA stamp present (and still an unidentifiable hallmark, looks somewhat cut off).

Now it's all clear.
What I believed the drilled sprinkler is actually the piston knob.
There's no question, it's an enema syringe.

There are two re marks - the span between them 150 years.
There is no conflict between Austrian Repunze and Z II, the latter being struck much later.
If it is 13 loth = 812/1000 then ZII for .835 is close enough. When dealing with different standards for re strike, the assayer chooses the mark of the closest standard available to him.
The original maker and origin remains unsolved.

The help has been wonderful so far.

There is a 3rd hallmark that looks like an A, partially cut off at the bottom. Any thoughts on that one?

I have adressed the third mark: quote from above:
There are actually two "repunzierung" marks of the Austro-Hungarian empire (1806) for medium articles and small articles (Vienna assay office - letter A in a rectangle - rhombus).
