Box with chain and sphere

Hello. I would like to ask if anyone knows the purpose of this 16th century (I think) silver box, which has a chain with a sphere shaped pendant, and letters and numbers engraved on its base. I can't see any marks on it. I beg your pardon for my English. Thank you very much.
