Napkin holder, Italian silver

Postby sebastian4743 » Thu Jan 01, 2015 6:58 am

I have this silver item which most probably is a napkin holder. I could not find any other similar objects to this one so I am not sure if the naming is correct. As it was made after 1968 might it be for paper napkins? Is it only for one or more? How should you place them in it? Is there a professional name for it?

Can you also help me identifying the maker of it? Surely made in Padwa but not sure about the maker. Is the "D" indicating the maker as well?

Thank you for your time and happy New Year to everybody! :)

Trev has given Italian Silverware and Jewellery Manufacturers. Start from here and search for the registered number in Padova, which is not seen properly in your pictures.

Thank you!

Are the numbers of the silversmith assigned for eternity even if a silversmith got out of the business?

Yes, as I understand it, the numbers are retired if the silversmith etc. goes out of business, but can be passed down from parent to child, or if taken over by another concern.

Can you confirm that the number is 296 PD?

I can't confirm it for 100% as the numbers on the object are not fully recognizable. I am pretty positive about the 2?6 but what is on the middle I really can't tell. At the beginning I thought it is 4 or 7 but I have not found any matches in your post about Italian marks. Is not it complete?

No, and probably never will be. There are a vast amount of individuals and companies working in the Italian precious metal industry and they come and go at a pace, but we're doing our best to record as many as possible.

Not an napkin holder but a breadstick holder.
Just google "portagrissini".

I think that Trev has hit the target.
I checked the ten goldsmiths in Padova whose mark begins by 2 and ends by 6
PD 206 Panizzolo MAURO
PD 216 BRUNELLO ANTONIO
PD 226 BRUNELLI MAURIZIO
PD 236 Braggion SANDRINO
PD 246 SCHIAVON GIANCARLO
PD 256 GIRARDELLO CLAUDIO
PD 266 SILVAN S.r.l.
PD 276 HORUS S.N.C.
PD 286 Lincetto MARCO
PD 296 DARIO DANILO & CARLO
Only PD 296 has a D as initial.
