Help identify these hallmarks

Postby Villamarea » Fri Mar 28, 2014 1:53 pm

According to Bonham's the attached 4 silver candlesticks were made in a French province during the first quarter of the 19th century. I do not have any reason to doubt them but do not find the hallmarks in my resource material and thus solicit your expertise. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Villamarea,

On mark No.3, is the letter above the '8' an 'E' or a 'N'?

Not French, I can't make out the first one, the maker's mark. 2 and 3 are Sicilian marks for .833 silver used between 1829 and 1873.

Yes, but the key will be contained by whether it is an 'E' or 'N' in the mark ('nostrali' - home produced, or 'estero' - imported).

I wasn't quite sure what you were asking, I think that only applies to the right facing marks. I think in this series it is either a number or an E. But I may be wrong, I have had very little Italian silver.

It is definitely an 8 to the right of the head profile facing left. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

Trev, now I completely follow you as to the E and the N above the 8 and I just looked at each of the four candlesticks and each of the four bobeches and that is a hard one to read - I really appreciate the input and I just need to be able to read that area. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

Maurice's thoughts have made realise that I was thinking about another mark from the same region.

This would, I believe, would be a similar version of your mark:

It was used in the Kingdom of the two Sicilies after 1826. The '8', as Maurice has stated, indicates a silver standard of 833/1000.

We need someone well versed in Italian marks to comment further.

Pictures are taken from an oblique direction .
Is it possible to get sharp photos from a perpendicular direction ?
