Identification of a candlestick

Postby Joerg » Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:42 pm

Dear Forum Members

please help me identify this candle stick. I found it on a flea market in Switzerland, the seller did not know where it came from.
It is made of two pieces, the base and the pillar are clinched together. Both parts are hallmarked. The base with a makers mark, probably "PC" and another mark, a head facing right, to a letter "N" and a number "8". The pillar has only the head mark.
The candlestick is quite worn, but no base material is visible. This and the fact that also the pillar is marked make me belive they are silver.
I did not find the mark in the pages here and also not in my Tardy, French, 22 edition.

Any help is welcome.

Jörg

Dear Trev.

Thank you very much. After being frustrated with Tardy I was not using Jan Divis, "Silberstempel aus aller Welt". I see now it would have given the place of origin.
You helped me a lot, also with the background information on the manufacturing period.

Do you, or other forum members, have experience with the style of 19th century Italian candlestick? While doing cleaning and research I got the impression, the candlestick is a mixure of styles. The pillar has fine lines, but the base is crude and its proportion do not fit to the pillar. I refer to the punched decoration with shells and other items from the sea. It is not repeated on the pillar.
Is my candlestick representing the typical manufacturing of the mid-19th century or is it somewhat on the lower end of quality?
I am not going to melt it or sell it, of course I keep it in my collection, but I am curious.

Thank you one more time

Jörg
