Portuguese Fish Serving Set

Post by raSmith »

Hi everyone. My name is Rick, I am a new member in the forums and also a novice silver collector. I've only been working with silver for a few months now, and these are the first items that have really stumped me. I'm hoping that some of you may be able to help.

I will attach a few pictures to this post with the actual items, but the hallmarks on this piece are incredibly small. I'll post hallmarks from this website that appear on the items as well as a description.

I believe one of the marks is from the Portuguese Hallmark page http://www.925-1000.com/Fportugal1938.html small articles second standard. The other mark, I'm assuming the manufacturer, is very hard to see. The best description I can give is that it looks like an upper case B over an O. Other than that, its too small to take a picture of.

Here are the pictures. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it.

5,031 marks listed

Hello Rick

Welcome to the forum.

For the years from 1887 until 1993 are listed 5,031 marks in an official guide, published by the National Mint = a little bit more then 300 fineness marks and town marks for Gold, Silver and Platinum = about 4,700 maker's marks; scattered from Lisbon to Porto (including Gondomar).

The Portuguese maker's mark system from 1887 isn't easy to decipher - it's maybe the Worlds almost complicated one.

Please look for example to these topics:

If you really couldn't give more details, then I must say: Sorry - be happy with yours set!

Kind regards silverport
