Vienna, Austria 800 Silver Spoon with Maker's Mark "A-P

Postby shlaybe » Sat Jul 18, 2009 2:15 pm

Hi,
I spent countless hours before figuring out what I know so far, and still...
This spoon has 3 marks in the gold washed bowl, and no others (only a mono @ back).
The left is within a diamond shape, and depicts the Rep. of Austria Toucan facing left, with city "W" (Vienna) on below beak on left, followed by what I believe is the #4 for 800 Silver Purity because the mark on the right is "800" within a square cartouche.
Help--the center mark is "A-P" within a circle that appears to have been pinched at the center..
Can someone tell me who made this?
Thanks ahead of time,
AM

Hello, this mark is not documented by the Viennese MAK (Museum für angewandte Kunst). So it is either just that: not yet documented, or it is not Viennese. In both cases the A-P is most likely not the maker, but just the retailer. There were just a handful of makers of silver cutlery in the Austro-Hungarian empire or its successing states. Klinkosch, Jarosinki & Vaugoin or Sturm must have supplied about 90 % of all cutlery for the region, the smaller manufacturers like Babirad & Zemen or F. Bibus supplied the rest. The shop that finally sold the pieces punched them with his own mark. Best wishes, Bahner

Just bumping this old post.

Could this be Alfred Pollak of Prague (branches in Budapest and Vienna)?

Hello, dont think so, Pollak used AP in a rectangle, no symbols in between. Regards, Bahner
