Dunhill sterling cigarette case from 1987, unknown hallmarks

Postby hirondel » Sun Mar 09, 2008 7:35 pm

I'd appreciate any assistance in identifying the hallmarks on my cigarette case. This case is one of 20 made for Alfred Dunhill of London and sold by them (10 in the USA, 10 in the rest of the world), per the manager of the Boston, Massachusetts store (now gone). I first saw one of these cases in Dunhill's San Francisco store in the fall of 1987, and was told they had just come out. I ended up buying this one in 1993, from the Boston store, but never thought to ask about the maker.

There are two sets of hallmarks. The lefthand marks are "925" (for sterling) and a star with the number 381, or 391, I can't quite tell. The righthand marks are, from left to right, an "AD" in a diamond shape, which is the mark of "Alfred Dunhill"; a "925" mark for sterling; a cross-shaped mark which looks like the London Assay office import mark for foreign silver, and last, a mark I can't identify -- what looks like a "G" on its side, perhaps.

Please see photos. I would be grateful for any help.
Photo 1 is of the case overall
Photo 2 is a composite photo showing both the left and righthand hallmarks

Thanks,
"Hirondel"

I believe that star/number/letters mark is Italian. If the letters are FI, that would indicate Firenze (Florence) as the 'City' (actually region) mark, with the number indicating the registered maker of the item.

Thanks, I will try to get a closer look at that particular mark. Now I need to find the source of the upside-down " @ " mark (it's similar) on the right. I'll look at Italian marks in the meantime..

Thanks, I had found this page earlier and, using it, identified what I think is the London Assay office import mark -- a cross-like mark. On closer inspection, I think I can make out an "FI" after the number 381, which would make the piece from Firenze as the earlier post suggested. So now it means discovering what silversmith is represented by the number 381.

Looks like I'm getting close to a final answer!

if you write to the dunhill company they ought to be able to tell you everything there is to know about the etui and its original owner:
