Help with MMR mark on small silver cup

Postby kristaoly » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:41 pm

I recently purchased a small silver cup. The mark on the bottom is stamped MM with an R directly beneath it. The cup has some nice leaf and heart engravings and measures 2 " tall and 1.5" diameter. It is also engraved OJS 1747 on the side. My guess is that is the owners initials and possibly the year of his or her birth???

Can anyone tell me about the MMR mark?

Respectfully,
Krista

Hello
There you have a very nice silver cup. It is norwegian - made in Oslo (Christiania) by Michel Michelsen Rømer - working 1707-1739. (born in 1682 - dead 1739). It is engraved 1747. Either is it engraved later or the widow has continued the workshop and that was not unusuel.

Now the wife continued business when the husband died. And that was normal practise.
Their son took over business in 1747 and most likely the widow continued business until 1747. We know that she was in business in 1743 because it is written that "har lidet at nære sig med og i slet tilstand" and in english freely written.

she "has only a litle bit to live from and (she) is in a bad condition" something like that.
