Notice concerning the determination of the shape of the hallmarks for indicating the fineness on gold and silver items.
Dated January 7, 1866
Based on article 3 of the law on the fineness of gold and silver goods of July 16, 1886 (Imperial law gazette No 120) the federal council had made the following provision:
The stamp for gold and silver items must contain:
1. imperial crown
2. the sun sign for gold or crescent moon sign for silver,
3. the specification of the fineness in thousand parts, and
4. the company or the trademark of the business for which the mark is effected in accordance with the law of 30 November 1874.
The crown must be located
in gold items within sun sign,
in silver items to the right of the crescent moon sign.

Legal loophole:
The law describes obligatory shape of marks for gold and silver (instead of previously used town marks and Loth fineness), but not obligatory marking of gold and silver items.
