Page 242 of The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914 by John Culme identifies the Charles Hubbard who entered a mark in 1801 at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a case maker from 4 St John’s Row, Brick Lane as one and the same as the Charles Hubberd who entered marks as a watch case maker in 1826 from Union Buildings, Kingsland Road, who notified a move to Pool Terrace, City Road in 1828 and who Grimwade identifies as having entered five marks from that address from 1834-1841. Culme notes Hubbard as a watch case maker at Peerless Row from 1835-38 and at the same place but re-named Poole Terrace from 1839-43.
Charles Hubbard married Sarah Withers at St Mary, Islington in 1798; they were both from that parish.
Christening records for children of Charles Hubbard, watch case maker and his wife Sarah show their address as Shoe Lane in 1801, St John Street in 1809, Poole Street in 1814 and Hosier Lane in 1816.
The burial of his wife Sarah aged 57 years, late of Pool Terrace, was registered at St Luke, Old Street in 1837.
He was listed as a watch case maker at Peerless Row rather than Pool Terrace on the 1841 UK Census.
He was listed on the 1851 UK Census aged 72 years at Baltic Street, St Luke’s parish and still a watch case maker. The entry shows he was born in St Luke’s parish.
The burial of a Charles Hubbard aged 73 years, late of Rosoman Buildings, Islington Green recorded at St James, St Pancras in 1853 may be relevant.
