ADAMS, Stephen I (Grimwade p.419)

Postby buckler » Mon Apr 08, 2013 2:32 pm

First mark as Bucklemaker 5 February 1774 at 3, St Annes Lane

7 April 1773
Livery

Bucklemaker marks until 1787, although according to Grimwade he was principally a Spoonmaker. Numerous buckles bearing his mark survive .
One of his trade cards gives him as "At the Hand and Spur in St Annes Lane near Aldersgate , London,
Makes & Sells all sorts of Silver Buckles, Tea Tongs, Salts & Milk Ewers in the neatest Manner & at the Lowest Prices "

26 July 1783
a Stephen Adams was turned over to a Stephen Adams , Loriner. Probably to Stephen Adams I as Stephen Adams II was not free until 1784 . Another relation ?

17 January 1787
Under Warden of Goldsmiths Company

18 January 1788
Upper Warden of Goldsmiths Company

21January 1789
Master Warden of Goldsmiths

Grimwade comments that he may have retired by 1790 and was probably dead by 1802.

He appears however, from an Old Bailey trial (No 58 of 14 February 1798) , to be still active in 1798.

Heal gives "Steven Adams & Son , Goldsmiths" St Annes Lane , Foster Lane 1790 -1796

The will of a Stephen Adams , Silversmith of St John, Hackney , Middlesex was proved at PCC on 24 March 1803 (PROB 11/1387/325) is almost certainly his

3 September 1760 William son of Stephen Adams of Chelsfield in the County of Kent Victualler apprenticed to Stephen Adams the younger Loriner of London. (An indenture contract that appears likely to point to Stephen Adams I's father.)
