MOWDEN, David (Grimwade p.603)

Postby MCB » Wed Apr 03, 2013 5:02 am

He married Ann Jones at St Luke, Finsbury in 1748.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property near Girdlers’ Hall in Bassishaw ward from 1746-1750.
Their first child Sarah was christened at St Michael, Bassishaw in 1750.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property next to Plaisterers’ Hall in Addle Street, Aldermanbury from 1752.
Sons Thomas and Joseph were christened at St Mary, Aldermanbury in 1752, son David christened there in 1754 and buried there in 1755. Grimwade notes that Mowden’s first mark was entered in 1739, the second not until 1774 and questions whether the latter was entered by a son of the same name. The burial in 1755 would appear to remove this possibility.
Although he was originally apprenticed to Edward Wood of the Goldsmiths he was listed in the 1768 London Poll Book at Addle Street as a freeman of the Blacksmiths Company. His father Joseph had been in the Blacksmiths Company.
He continued to be assessed at Addle Street until 1775, a new tenant being assessed there from 1776.
