LANGFORD, John II (Grimwade p.575)

Postby dognose » Thu Mar 21, 2013 1:32 pm

Possibly the same, or perhaps the father of, the John Langford, described as a Goldsmith and Jeweller from London, that arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, shortly before September 1809.

The John Langford from London was married to Grace, and father of the Nova Scotia silversmith, James J. Langford.

Following the death of John Langford, sometime after 1815, Grace remarried again, this time to the Nova Scotia Silversmith, Peter Nordbeck.

See James J. Langford at page three of: The Canadian Trade, Information, Advertisements, Etc.

Grimwade’s describes him:
As apprenticed to Henry Bailey of the Clothworkers Company in 1752 and free in 1760;
As a journeyman to his master who worked in Foster Lane and that somewhere along the line became the partner of John Sebille, the ledgers of Parker and Wakelin in 1766 showing them as suppliers of a wide range of pierced work including bottle stands, salts, bread baskets and cream pails;
Made bankrupt in 1770;
Last mentioned in the 1773 Parliamentary Report as Sebille’s partner and plate workers in the St Martin le Grande area.

Further research shows:
He was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth christened at St Dunstan in the West in 1737;
He was probably the John Langford, silversmith of St Leonard’s parish, Foster Lane, who signed a bond in 1767 to marry Susannah Mince;
He was probably the father of John and Mary who were christened at Christ Church, Newgate Street in 1770 and 1772 respectively;
No positive identification of him or his son John in the UK in the following years;
No UK record of Susannah’s death or a marriage of John Langford to Grace.

John Langford II would have been around 72 years of age if he had arrived in Canada in 1809 to take up trade as a goldsmith and jeweller. It would be helpful to know how old John Langford of Nova Scotia was when he died.
