WHEATE, Charles (Grimwade p.356-7)

Post by MCB »

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

Applications for freedom by patrimony in the Goldsmiths Company were made in 1810, 1832 and 1833 by his sons William Fearn born (b.1785), Samuel (b. 1800) and Jeremiah (b.1797) which show their father was made free in 1779 but no record of his apprenticeship has been found.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1780 in partnership with Isaac Hartley as gold workers from 7 Priest Court, Foster Lane and another alone in the same trade in 1788 from 16 Bagnio Court, Newgate Street.
Two daughters of Charles and Elizabeth Wheate were christened at Christ Church, Newgate Street in 1788 and 1789.
A trade directory of 1790 shows him at this address as a worker in gold, steel and metal.
The christening record in 1792 at St George in the East, Tower Hamlets for George, son of Charles and Elizabeth Wheate, records his father as a gent from St George’s Terrace. He was also assessed to Land Tax there in 1792.
Their son Charles was christened at St Martin, Ludgate in 1795.
Their son Jeremiah’s application for freedom shows he was born in Bethnal Green. His christening record at St Matthew, Bethnal Green in 1797 shows his father was a surveyor.
Their son Samuel’s application for freedom shows he was born in Half Moon Alley, Bishopsgate.
The 1841 UK Census shows Charles Wheat aged 80 years living in The Goldsmiths Almshouses in Acton. The burial of Charles Wheat was recorded at St Mary, Acton in 1842. Both pieces of information may be relevant

Pure speculation, but from his first recorded son's name , William Fearn Wheate , his wife was probably the daughter of a Mr. Fearn.
Who may, or may not, have been the silversmith William Fearn.

11 July 1782 Charles Wheate Goldsmith married Elizabeth Fern at the Parish of Earl Sterndale Derbyshire.

(Because William Fearn the silversmith's father and maybe he also was from Derbyshire, I believe Buckler's speculation is valid.)
