He was born in Ireland around 1810.
He married Elizabeth Rouse at St Pancras parish church in 1835; both were from that parish.
In 1837 he registered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall from 30 Smith Street, Northampton Square as a pendant maker.
His daughter Elizabeth Charlotte was christened at St James, Clerkenwell in 1840. The christening record and the 1841 UK Census show their address as 5 Compton Street and his employment as a watch pendant maker.
No trace has so far been found of the family in the 1851 UK Census.
The 1861 UK Census records James, wife Elizabeth and daughter Elizabeth Charlotte living at Offord Road, Islington. He had become a Collector of Taxes.
His wife Elizabeth died in Islington in 1865. He died in the same year aged 55 years. His last address was 4 Hanover Square, Kensington.
His daughter married Frederick J Anderson in 1866. He was also a pendant maker. The marriage record shows her father as a jeweller.
