BARBOT, Paul (Grimwade p.430)

Postby MCB » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:27 am

He married Elizabeth Davies at St George, Bloomsbury in 1759. He was recorded from St Giles in the Fields parish.
Duties were paid by him as a goldsmith of St Giles in the Fields for the Apprentice Indentures of Stephen Gauden in 1765 and William Sanford in 1771 .
He entered his only mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1771 as a goldsmith from Seven Dials.
Trade Directories indicate he was still at St Andrew Street, Seven Dials until at least 1782 rather than 1779 as Grimwade has noted. Trade Directory entries also indicate he was at Tottenham Court Road from 1785 rather than from 1790.
An entry in "The Times" in December 1798 offering a reward for information on the whereabouts of a missing person shows his address was 6 New Road, Fitzroy Square.
Elizabeth Barbot’s burial was recorded at St James Piccadilly in 1826. She was aged 89 years; the first part of her last address is indecipherable but continues as New Road which was presumably the marital home at Fitzroy Square.
His death record is still to be traced.

There is a February 1811 listing for the burial of Paul Burbot at St James, Piccadilly, Westminster that looks like a possibility. It depends on who is interpreting the handwriting.

Although the name looks like Paul " Burbot" in the register the St James, Piccadilly connection is too much of a coincidence for it not to be our man. Thanks Pat.

Paul Barbot who was buried at the church of St James, Hamstead Road on 1 Feb 1811 was aged 78 (according to the memorial). He was the son of John Barbot (1702-1766) and Rachel. I have a copy of his will (and several other will in this family). His father was also a goldsmith.

Many thanks, Ann
Very much appreciated.

If you have a précis, or better still, full transcripts of the wills of Paul and/or his father John we would welcome them to be posted here ! It is sometimes surprising what information from them is useful, especially if the testator leaves anything to a name recognisable as a goldsmith. Even the names of witnesses can be useful, as they were often near neighbours and may enable us to resolve an ambiguous address.
