He was christened at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1793 the son of John and Alice.
Indentures were signed in 1808 for Abraham son of John Scott, toyman of West Smithfield to be the apprentice of Joseph Partridge, Merchant Taylor.
He married Elizabeth Hayes Hands in 1815 at St Marylebone. He was from St Bartholomew parish and she was a minor from St Marylebone parish born in Oxford around 1798.
Indentures were signed in 1816 for William son of Thomas English, wine merchant of West Smithfield to be the apprentice of Abraham Scott, Merchant Taylor.
Christening records at St Sepulchre provide the following information:-
1818-23 Abraham is shown as a gentleman from Smithfield,
1825-33 he is shown as a jeweller or wholesale jeweller from the same address,
1837-8 he is shown as a jeweller or wholesale jeweller from 19 Charterhouse Square.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1828 as a smallworker from West Smithfield, in 1830 and 1834 as a goldworker from Smithfield and in 1842 as a goldworker from 59-60 Red Lion Street.
The 1841 UK Census recorded the family at the Charterhouse Square address where he is shown as a merchant.
His burial in 1849 aged 56 years is recorded in the St James, St Pancras register; his last address was Oster Hills, St Albans.
His wife aged 53 years and his family are shown at that address on the 1851 Census.

Hi,
Abraham Scott had a son William and a grandson Percy who were all jewellers.
Is anything known of Percy's professional life?
My mother is a grand daughter of Percy Scott and Ellen Rosa Kennett and knew little of her grandparents as her parents moved to Sydney Australia at a young age.
Hope you can help

Hi Mick,
Welcome to the Forum.
Thanks for adding the extra information.
There were at least two William Scotts in the trade at London at this time. Do you have any further information, middle names, addresses, etc.?

He is listed in the 1891 UK Census at Poplar Lodge Clapham, London, England as a traveller jeweller. He is listed in the 1901 UK Census at 2 Woodhouse Lane Finchley, Middlesex, England as a jeweller's com. agent. He is listed in the 1911 UK Census at Prittlewell, Essex, England as a wholesale jeweller. He is listed in the 1921 Hughes Business Directory for London England at 12 & 14 Beak St Regent St W under the heading of Jewellers, Who. & Mfg.

Thanks Silverly for filling in the detail.
Hi,
This is a summary of what I know:
Abraham Scott’s professional life has already been documented above.
Together with his wife Elizabeth Hayes Hands, he purchased Oster Hills residence at St Albans in 1850 and died early the following year. (Oster Hills is the link between the three generations of jewellers).
William Scott was born in the 1824 and married Mary Ann in 1853.
The 1862 Directory lists William Scott, Esq, at Oster Hills, and similar entries continued until at least 1890. The 1881 census shows William as a wholesale Jeweller “In The Employ Of Head Of Family (Jeweller)”. Financial problems (bankruptcy) loomed and in June 1892 Oster Hills was put on the market by order of the Mortgagees. There were even criminal proceedings taken against William Scott, which led to him being sentenced to four weeks in prison (without hard labour).
Percy Scott, a son of William and Mary Ann, was born in Finchley, Middlesex in 1856. As Silverly said, the same 1881 census shows Percy was ”In The Employ Of Family (Jeweller)”.
He married Ellen Rosa J Kennett of Marylebone District in 1890. Percy and Ellen are my maternal great grandparents. Their children may have been born in Wandsworth District, but they were living in Willesden in 1901. Percy Scott was a jeweller’s commission agent at that time of their birth:
- Douglas Scott born ‘London’ c. 1891 and
- twins Olive Scott and Margaret/Marguerite Scott born ‘London’ c. 1892.
A note to my mother in the 1950’s from Marguerite’s son confirmed that William had his town address at Ely Place, London where he lived above during the week. At the weekend he went to his country address at Osterly (sic) Hills, St Albans. This was a large house with several acres of land.
I'd any other information known about Percy's professional life?
Regards, Mick
