BURMAN, Samuel II (Grimwade p.378)

Postby MCB » Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:53 am

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He was christened in 1785 at St Mary Magdalene, Woolwich the son of William and Mary.
Indentures were signed in 1799 for him to be the apprentice of Samuel Potticary (reads Pollicary on the document) jeweller of Beech Street (Grimwade p.379). His father William was recorded as of HM Dockyard, Woolwich.
As recorded in Pallot’s Marriage Index of England he married Ann Hatton at Wandsworth church in 1809.
Four of their children were christened at St Mary, Newington 1810-15, the two latter in 1814 and 1815 recording that Samuel was a jeweller at Hunter Street.
He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1819 as a goldworker and christening records at St Mary, Newington for two more of their children in 1819 and 1821 show him at the Hunter Street address as a jeweller.
A christening record for another child in 1825 at St George the Martyr, Southwark shows him still a jeweller but a change of address to Dover Road.
His burial is recorded at St George the Martyr in 1831 aged about 47 years and his last address as Dover Road.

Indentures were signed in 1824 by James Tree, the son of Stephen, a bricklayer from New Kent Road, to be Samuel Burman’s apprentice and to learn the art of jeweller at 1 Exeter Place, Great Dover Street, Southwark. This address differs in detail from the one recorded above.
