Smallworkers List (Section IV) and Goldworkers List (Section VII).

Indentures were signed in 1768 for Edward Holmes son of Edward Holmes to be apprenticed to Jabez Daniell goldsmith of Carey Lane (Grimwade p.483-4). Edward Holmes senior was a Citizen, Founder and jeweller from Foster Lane.
A maker’s mark was entered in 1770 at Goldsmiths Hall by Edward Holmes as a smallworker from 9 Foster Lane. As the Apprentice Indentures for Edward Holmes junior had not been signed until 1768 (see above) the 1770 mark was entered by Edward senior.
Another maker’s mark entered in 1784 as a goldworker of the same name also from 9 Foster Lane may be the mark of either Edward senior or junior.
No further information has been found which is directly related to them.

The notion that there were two by the same name is further endorsed by the Will of Edward Holmes, late jeweller of 9 Foster Lane, being proved for probate on 19th April 1780 (National Archives reference PROB 11/1063/330).
The mark of 1784 entered from Foster Lane must therefore relate to Edward Holmes the younger.
Land Tax on property in Foster Lane continued to be assessed on Edward Holmes the younger until 1789. John Kirke (Grimwade p.366) took over the property in 1790.

The Commissioners in a Commission of Bankrupt awarded and issued forth against Edward Holmes of Foster-Lane in the City of London, Jeweller, Dealer and Chapman, intend to meet on the 13th March next, at 10 o'Clock in the Forenoon, at Guildhall, London, to make a Final Dividend of the Estate and Effects of the said Bankrupt; when and where the Creditors, who have not already proved their Debts, are to come prepared to prove the same, or they will be excluded the Benefit of the said Dividend. And all claims not then proved will be disallowed.
