Goldworkers List (Section VII).

He was christened at St Marylebone church in 1788 the son of William and Elizabeth.
He married Elizabeth Cox of the parish at St Mary, Lambeth in 1818. He was from St James parish Westminster. A witness to the marriage was David Cox who entered a maker’s mark in 1828 at Goldsmiths Hall in partnership with him as a goldworker.
William and Elizabeth’s children's christening records at St James, Piccadilly 1823-30 all show their father as either a jeweller or goldsmith. All of the addresses are somewhat unreadable but may be Frith Square.
In 1834 he entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall alone from Rupert Street which had been the address of his partnership with Cox. The Goldsmith Hall records show he moved to 21 Denmark Street in 1837.
The 1841-51 Censuses record him as a jeweller at Denmark Street, the latter showing he employed six men and also that his son William (born 1826) was a silversmith.
His burial record dated in 1854 is at All Soul’s, Kensal Green Cemetary. He was 66 years old; his last address was Denmark Street.
The 1861 UK Census shows his sons James and William as goldsmiths and engravers at 21 Denmark Street. For further history of the business see Volume 1 page 87 of The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914 by John Culme.
