CHAPLIN, Robert James (Grimwade p.376)

Goldworkers List (Section VII).

Born in Bermondsey 1807.
Christening record for St John, Horsleydown, Bermondsey, Southwark dated 27th February 1807. Parents were James, a chemist and Ann.
Married Esther Hoppen at St Anne, Limehouse on 9th September 1828. The bridegroom was of St Mary, Staining parish. The bride was born in Limehouse in 1805.
Christening records for 3 of their children have been traced to the St James, Clerkenwell register dating from April 1830-December 1832; each shows the father as a goldsmith from Kirby Street.
Christening records for a further 7 of their children have been traced to St Botolph without Aldgate register dating from January 1836-February 1846; each shows the father as either a goldsmith or a jeweller from Red Cross Square.
1841 UK Census for Red Cross Square as a jewellery manufacturer.
1851 UK Census for Forest Vale, Lewisham as a goldsmith. Also resident was a son Robert Hoppen Chaplin (born 1832) recorded as a goldsmith.
1861 UK Census for Forest Vale Lodge, Lewisham as a goldsmith.
Wife Esther died in Lewisham in 1866.
1871 UK Census as 1871 except that Chaplin had retired.
Died 28th August 1875.
London Deaths & Burials Index for Christ Church with St Paul, Forest Hill, Kent register dated 2nd September 1875.
National Probate Calendar for Principal Registry dated 15th October 1875. Last address Deal, Kent; value of estate under £25000.

He signed indentures in 1821 as the son of James Chaplin deceased, late chemist from New Square, Southwark, to be the apprentice of John Vine (Grimwade p.369) of the Goldsmiths Company, a ring maker from 5 Staining Lane.
