DAVENPORT, John (Grimwade p.392)

Postby buckler » Mon Feb 07, 2011 5:34 pm

Almost certainly the John Davenport, son of Sanders Davenport , citizen and blacksmith (deceased) who was apprenticed on 29 March 1787 to Richard Parr, Spectaclemaker's Company. Richard Parr is recorded by Grimwade as "no record of apprenticeship or freedom", first mark 1773, last 1786 and in PR1773 as a bucklemaker . Parr's will of 1788 mentions John Davenport as an apprentice and leaves him £5.5.0 for mourning. Who Davenport was turned over to on Parr's death is unknown.

John Davenport's premises at 3, Kings Head Court, Gutter Lane where he entered a mark as bucklemaker on 15 June 1796
had previously been occupied by the bucklemaker George Stewart

8 July 1800 John son of Sanders Davenport late Blacksmith of London deceased made free of the City by patrimony in the Company of Blacksmiths. The certificate shows that Sanders Davenport was made free in 1770 and his son John was born in 1773.

Quite extra-ordinary !
Perhaps John failed to find a master after the death of Richard Parr, Spectacle Maker, and never completed his apprenticeship. Although why he waited until 1800 to get his freedom by patrimony is a mystery
