Help with maker's mark, please :0)

Postby SusanWhite » Thu Mar 15, 2007 10:35 pm

Hello Friends!

I am now casting my sights on learning French hallmarks and makers ... I guess I should wish myself bonne chance!!

We have what I believe is called a saupoudreuse [a shifter??] which is definitely French [proud of me for getting this far??] because I can see the large guarantee Minerva under the loop quite clearly -- getting a photo of it has been another experience ... it is located on the inner aspect of the bowl and, to make life interesting, the maker's mark is on the other side of the handle on the inner aspect of the bowl. I am trying to improve my photography skills, but getting a good shot of these marks has been a real challenge.

I'm including several shots of the marks -- the last photo is Minerva ... I can tell you that by looking with the loop, the maker's mark has 2 letters -- I'm pretty sure the initials are L C [could be L G] and they appear on either side of what looks like a knife and fork crossed.

Any help you all have would be deeply appreciated and warmly welcomed!

Sincerely,
Susan

Hello, the pic of the mark is a little fuzzy, but it looks like the letters "L" and "C" with two crossed objects. Then it is L. Coignet from Paris. Best wishes, Bahner

Dear Bahner,

Guten abendt! [I think I spelled that right...]

Thank you very much for this information. I am certain it is L C and it is definitely a knife and fork crossed, with the initials to either side.

Do you happen to know when L. Coignet was doing business?

Again, thanks so much! :0)

Sincerely,
Susan

Hello, that is really all I know, except that they must have been out of business before 1970, because in that year another maker is listed as successor under the same adress. Best wishes, Bahner

Bonsoir Susan,

I totally agree with Bahner and I can complete the information by telling that Louis Coignet was operating from his shop located 20 rue Barbette in Paris and his maker's mark is registered from 1893 to 1928. Hope this help. Best Regards. Myriam
