Need help identifying date & maker, please. Thanks.

Post by Reiner K »

It seems to me that this large spoon (27 cm) is French made late in 18 century, but that's all I could find... I'm even not sure if it's a silver made? I wonder, what date and maker are?
Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation...

Reiner

Nice! Your spoon is from Dole, dept. Jura, 1764/65, by Joseph Opinel. The marks are:

1) Addorsed C’s, crowned: Reconnaisance mark of the Bescancon/Dole mint, 1745-1777
2) IO over the Dole civic arms: Maker’s mark of Joseph Opinel, 1749-1794
3) Fleur-de-lys over an ampersand: Dole Jurande (Warden’s) mark of Etienne-Michel Fady, 16 Jul 1764-22 Aug 1765

Joseph Opinel
Born: 8 Sep 1715, Longwy, son of Pierre Opinel & Anne Lejeune
Apprenticed: ca. 1730/32, to Jean-Baptiste Renard, transferred ca. 1732/35 to Pierre-Noel David
Master: 10 Oct 1749, Dole
Died: 27 Nov 1794 [7 frimaire an III], Dole

Hope this helps!
