Hi Mart

Thanks for the great picture.

The Russian name for the timber seems to be ",Kapokorn"

I have another smaller box (posted on this forum before ,with gold and sapphire thumb piece) posted here again.

In a timber that is called Amboyna or Thuya wood. Used a lot in French furniture, mainly as a decorative veneer.
Which are now a protected species ,similar to rosewood and ivory.
I am not sure if the Russian species is the same or different? Russian timber looks a little different (a bit similar)

Grigory Makarov, a carpenter from the town of Slobodsky, who lived in the first quarter of the 19th century, is considered to be the founder of burl business in Vyatka. His family manufacture extended throughout 19th century.
Based on their awards, your case was made in late 19th century or at the turn of the century.

I think it's a Kap. Kapokoren is the same Kap, but not on the trunk or branches, but on the roots of the birch.
Kapokoren is inferior to kap in strength, and its pattern is much larger and with black dots, but it is many times larger in forests.

Hello Ag and Mart
Again many thanks for your replies and great information, always good to know the history and age of pieces we have.

I probably would not have purchased the case if the stamps were not there,as it is similar to my small box,the stamps made it a bit more interesting.

Again many thanks for your assistance.

Regards Guido.

Hi Members
I have come across this box, with some of the same stamps as my box,as my box only has ,Mark no 3 1863,mark no 4 1872,and not the later date marks.
I am assuming my box was made before the next mark no 5 1882.

I would have thought if it was made after 1882 ,that mark would also be on my box.

Not sure if you feel my thinking is accurate.

Kind Regards Guido.
