I need an advice.

Postby amena » Mon Dec 20, 2021 5:34 am

Hi all
I need an advice.
I bought this reliquary from the mid 18th century.
Image
It has a wooden structure covered with a very thin embossed silver foil.
As can be seen from the photo, the silver is completely black.
Usually I prefer the silver to be clean, while leaving the chiaroscuro due to the patina, but this time I'm not sure how to proceed.
The plate is very thin and has initial cracks in some places.
I am afraid that I would easily cause damage by cleaning it with the usual systems (cotton and silver polish) and I would not want to use those liquids, which remove all the patina.
What do you advise me?
Thanks for attention.

Hi,
It ia a museum piece; they never clean antique silver of this kind but rather use the term conservation.
Do not use abrasives. I think there are liquids without abrasives (chemically active), apply with soft cloth to prevent further corrosion and clean accumulated dirt.
In short, leave it like this as much as possible.
Regards

Hi Ag 2012
I really think I'll take your advice.
I'll leave it as it is.
Thanks
Amena
