Supposed to be gold fitting, strange small box?

Post by gsmoggy »

Hello Members
Have come across this interesting tortoiseshell box that is very small, has 2 corners missing ,said to have tested as 21ct gold by owner,
has unusual catch and hinges (not sure if original)
Any feelings of origin or age? Not sure what it was used for ,may be snuff, looks early ,not sure, not my box at this stage.

Regards Guido.

The central ornamentation, as seen in fourth image from top, appears to have some markings in two parts of the lower left zone. Just mentioning this as you have not noted any marks.

Hello Traintime
Thanks for your comment. I can see what looks to be marks on the right side just beside one of the small round sections.
looks to be a long cross sort of shape. other mark cannot make it out.
I do not have the box ,I will contact the owner .

Regards Guido.

Hi Traintime

No marks on cartouche to be seen. I have said to the owner in my opinion the box maybe French or Dutch circa 1800.
Some betters images supplied by owner.
Many thanks for your help.
