Please help to identify if item is not fake!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows what may be the fresh silver mark on the bottom of my items ? I have circled it for you on the attached pictures. Is it a hidden original hallmark? I bought few things from different sellers, and noticed these marks on each on them. It looks like they tried to hide something. I think they may try to hide original age of the item. Any opinions? Thanks

Only signs of old labels, may be.

But on this item if you touch this place, you can feel even small bend.

And edges not straight, for me similar to molten silver.

It looks like someone removed a dent from the bottom.

It was a bit strange that I bough 5 items and 3 of them had very similar mark on the bottom.

Welcome to the Forum.

A possibility is that the former owners were unsympathetic to antiques and for security purposes had postcodes/zip codes scratched on to the pieces and such marking has since been polished out.

Strangely,a similar thing had been seen on China where a makers mark had obviously been ground or scraped out for unknown reasons. Whether these are actions of a jobber or retailer is not clear.

The grinding out of maker's marks on china and porcelain is usually the result of items failing the final inspection at the potteries and being classed as seconds. In this way the better manufacturers can disassociate themselves from such products but still gain a return from them.
